Ferndale and Fortuna Veterinary

Our Staff

Our behind-the-scene team makes sure everything runs smoothly. Their areas of responsibility are vast, and often overflow into time outside business hours. We couldn’t do what we do without them!

Jennifer Flores, RVT, Accounting

Practice Owner, Nursing Staff

Jennifer started veterinary life as a kennel assistant at 15 years old working in a veterinary hospital in the Sierra foothills. She started as a music major at Sacramento State University, but graduated with a B.S. in Biology, and a minor in Chemistry. Jen tried to apply for a job with her new degree, but decided she didn’t like life outside veterinary medicine. She soon started learning the trade of a veterinary technician, and accepted a job with us in 2010 (and met husband Kris). After a year of working at Fortuna Veterinary, Jennifer moved back to the Davis area, where she worked at Woodland Veterinary Hospital learning the ways of hospital business, all while obtaining her RVT license. But she didn’t stop there! Jennifer moved back to Humboldt with Dr. Kris Flores in 2014, where they were married in 2015, welcomed baby boy Benjamin and purchased Ferndale and Fortuna Veterinary in September 2016! Whew!  We can’t wait to see what’s next!

Kelly Victorine

Office Manager

Kelly has one of the longest running histories with Ferndale Veterinary. She celebrated 25 years with Ferndale Veterinary in 2016! Originally hired as a receptionist in 1991, Kelly quickly moved into the role as office manager and has been there ever since. Born in Sacramento, but raised in Humboldt County, Kelly has been (and remains) a strong presence in our community. She was a 4-H leader for 20 years and has been on the Jr. Livestock Board for over 30 years! She’s helped many kids over the years excel in animal and livestock care and continues to do so today. Thank you!

Mayra LaMastus, RVT

Nursing Staff

Born in Ukiah and raised in Willits, Mayra got her first job in a veterinary hospital as an assistant in 2005. She received an A.S in General Studies at Mendocino College, but later transferred to Cosumnes River College in 2008 to complete an A.S. degree in Veterinary Technology. Mayra spent 3 years in North Carolina alongside her husband, Clifford, while he was stationed in the Army, but moved back to California in 2013 where she brought her lovable personality and smiling face to us! Mayra, husband Cliff, and daughter Mila, share their home with a cat named Moe, and their dog, BeeGee (a Pug with serious personal space issues).

Mona Schlageter, RVT

Nursing Staff

Mona grew up in Carpinteria, California. She got her first taste of veterinary medicine at the young age of 15 when she got a job working as a veterinary assistant. Mona studied at Cal Poly, then later at Cuesta College, before taking a job at Green Gate Farms, an Arabian horse breeding facility, where she worked for 10 years. Mona left Green Gate to become a dog groomer, where she ended up grooming pets in a veterinary hospital for 6 years. Mona eventually hung up her grooming apron in exchange for a job in Pismo Beach where she acquired her veterinary technician license and worked as technician for 7 years. But the horses called her back to Green Gate where she worked for another 5 years before moving to Humboldt County in 2012, and joined our team in January, 2013. Mona also has a special love for dog agility, and competed for 17 years, and has also competed at National level! She just doesn’t stop, does she?

Karly Christen, RVT

Nursing Staff

Another local Humboldt girl, Karly job-shadowed at Ferndale Veterinary as a high school student, prompting her to enroll at Yuba College in Marysville. Karly graduated with a degree in Veterinary Technology (must have been all those fantastic technicians she had for role models) is currently in the process of taking her final board exam before she receives the coveted title of RVT. We are so excited for her! But animals aren’t Karly’s only passion; growing up with a music teacher for a mom, Karly also plays the piano and violin, loves horseback riding, whitewater rafting, and camping.

Philip Mincks, RVT

Nursing Staff

Phil graduated from Western Career College (now known as Carrington College) in 1998. He moved back home to Humboldt and eventually ended up employed with Ferndale Veterinary in 2000. He took a break from veterinary medicine in 2007, but he just couldn’t stay away, and returned to our team in 2011. Phil and his wife, Jennifer, stay busy with their horses, Miniature Pinscher, and 4 children. He is well known by his co-workers by his sense of humor and his uncanny ability to quote movie lines.

Jessica Uutela, RVT

Nursing Staff

Jessica grew up in Orange County, and got her first experience in a veterinary hospital as a receptionist. She moved to Humboldt County in 2000 and joined the staff at Ferndale Veterinary. From technician to receptionist, there isn’t much Jessica can’t do! She took a couple breaks from veterinary medicine over the years, but she’s always found her way back and we couldn’t be happier to have her! Her cheerful smiles and happy personality makes the workday even brighter!

Edgar, RVT

Nursing Staff

Katie Brownfield, RVT

Nursing Staff

Another long-term employee, Katie started as a volunteer for Ferndale Veterinary as a high school student during the summers and in the evenings after school. After high school, Katie moved to Redding where she attended Shasta college, but returned to Ferndale Veterinary (as an actual paid employee this time) after she moved back home in 1999. However, Katie left us once again in 2005 when she moved to Utah so her husband, Jason, could pursue a career in architecture. While in Utah, Katie continued to work as a veterinary technician in a specialty veterinary hospital until she and her husband returned home in 2010 and she joined our team once again. When Katie isn’t at work, she’s taking care of her two dogs or riding her horses!

Frances Stinson

Nursing Staff

Frances joined out team in 2010 when we acquired the Fortuna Veterinary office from Dr. Hunter, but her animal experience goes way back. She started as a volunteer for the Sequoia Park Zoo at 13 years old where she got to work with the bears and chimpanzees. At the age of 19, she was hired on as a relief zookeeper for almost 5 years. Frances took a part-time job at Fortuna Veterinary with Dr. Hunter to learn more about animal medicine, but eventually switched over to become a full time employee of veterinary medicine. Frances enrolled and completed her Veterinary Assistant program, but is now currently enrolled in the Penn Foster Veterinary Technician program with plans to be a registered veterinary technician! We can’t wait! When she’s not studying, Frances loves watching movies, reading, gaming and archery

Maria Lopez

Nursing Staff

Ana Rodriguez

Client Care Specialist

Ana started working at Ferndale Veterinary in December 2014. She started as a part time employee, but it didn’t take long for her to become full-time! Her friendly attitude, attention to detail and bi-lingual (Spanish) skills make her a valuable asset to the practice! Ana has a strong sense of family, was born and raised in the Ferndale community, and currently resides there with her husband and their 3 children.

Selena Gillenwater

Client Care

Abby Young

Client Care

Katrina Paris, CVA

Nursing Support Staff and Client Care

Katrina was interested in animals and veterinary medicine at a young age while growing up on her grandpa’s farm. Even though Katrina completed Animal Behavior College’s Veterinary Assistant program, and was originally hired as a veterinary assistant, we lured her to our Fortuna hospital to become a receptionist in 2013. Her cheerful smiles and friendly attitude made her a perfect fit for attending the front desk! Katrina, her husband, Brigg, and their two dogs, welcomed baby boy Brantley in 2015. In 2017, they added another addition to their family when Katrina adopted a Labrador puppy with a broken leg from work.

Mariah Dishmon

Nursing Support Staff and Client Care

Mariah joined us in November of 2014 for a part-time job during her junior year at Fortuna High School. Mariah left for a short-time after graduating high school to attend Humboldt State University in August of 2016. However, she continued to fill-in during breaks and holidays and eventually decided to return part-time in May 2017 while still attending HSU. Mariah’s goals include graduating with a degree in Cellular Molecular Biology and become a clinical laboratory scientist. Outside of work and school she likes caring for her two kittens, two dogs and loves English horseback riding.
